Biarritz has a reputation as an expensive city. It is deserved in some respects. But a large part of what makes the city genuinely valuable costs absolutely nothing.
The beaches of Biarritz — Grande Plage, Côte des Basques, Miramar, Port-Vieux — are freely accessible year-round. Outside July and August, they are deserted or nearly so. You can walk, swim if you are brave, and watch the surf for hours. The sea museum is free on the first Sunday of each month. The markets are destinations in themselves, entirely free, and infinitely more representative of real Biarritz life than any tourist app.
