The GR10 in short: the stretch of the Pyrenees you can do in a weekend

22 February 2026 icibiarritz 1 min de lecture

The GR10 runs from Hendaye to Banyuls over 860 kilometres. It takes two months to complete in full. But some sections take two or three days — and they rank among the finest walks accessible from Biarritz.

The Hendaye to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port stretch

The first section of the GR10, covering Hendaye to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port over four stages, is technically accessible to regular walkers without high-mountain experience. The elevation gain is real but manageable. The landscapes blend Basque bocage, summer pastures and a few passes above 1,000 metres. Gîtes are plentiful and well run.

The weekend version: Sare to Ainhoa

If two or three days are available, the stretch between Sare and Ainhoa — via the Col de Lizuniaga and the village of Dantxaria — is perhaps the most beautiful section for a weekend. Listed villages, shaded paths, views of the Atlantic in clear weather, and the chance to finish in Ainhoa with a table and a glass well worth the journey.

Practical information

Red and white waymarking throughout. Walking boots even in good weather — Basque paths are rarely dry. Book gîtes in advance during season.
