This is THE night when all of Biarritz meets on the sand. On 15 August, as darkness falls, the sky ignites above the ocean in front of thousands of upturned faces. Ten suspended minutes, and the best summer memory most local children will keep.

Some fixtures are not up for debate. The 15 August fireworks are one of them: you do not go because it is beautiful — that much is established — but because everyone goes, and missing it would mean missing the town on a night when it is entirely itself.

An evening that starts long before dark

The Grande Plage fills from late afternoon. Towels down, ice creams bought, groups growing as the hours pass: the wait is part of the ritual, and possibly the best part of it. Families settle low on the sand, couples prefer the heights towards the lighthouse or the Côte des Basques.

The local tip

Arrive early — genuinely early. After 8pm there is little left on the sand, and the railing spots have been taken for hours. If you are driving, forget the centre: park towards Aguilera and walk down, you will save an hour on the way back.

Free, outdoors, and more or less unmissable.

One last detail visitors tend to miss: the best vantage point is not necessarily the Grande Plage. From the Atalaye plateau or the Rocher de la Vierge you get the fireworks AND the lit town behind them. Fewer people, the same show.
