La Rhune, at 905 metres, is the emblematic peak of the French Basque Country. Every year, tens of thousands of visitors ride the small rack railway up from Col de Saint-Ignace. What few people know is that there’s a marked trail allowing you to walk up — no queues, no tickets, and far more interesting views along the way.
The GR10 trail
The GR10 runs along the northern flank of La Rhune. From Col de Saint-Ignace, the trail climbs steadily for 2 hours to the summit. Total elevation gain is around 700 metres. Moderate difficulty, accessible for families with children over 8.
What to see on the way up
Pottoks — the wild Basque ponies — graze freely on the high pastures. They’re usually spotted in the first hour of the climb. From the summit on clear days, the view takes in the Bay of Biscay, the Atlantic Pyrenees and the Spanish coast.
Practical information
Starting point: Col de Saint-Ignace (accessible by car from Ascain). Allow 4-5 hours for the return trip. Bring water and warm clothing — the summit can be in cloud even when it’s sunny below.
