Biarritz has 6 km of coastline and over 10 identified spots. The ones that appear in every guide — the Côte des Basques, the Grande Plage, Milady — are well documented. The others require knowing where to look.
The logic of Basque breaks
The Basque coastline works with the sandbars. The best peaks shift according to the winter storms that reshape the seabed. A spot that works in October can be mediocre in July. Locals know this. Tourists don’t.
The criteria that matter
Wave direction, wind direction (offshore — easterly — is ideal on the Basque Coast), tide coefficient (the best sessions are usually 2 to 4 hours after low tide) and swell height.
Where to get reliable information
The best local forecasts come from neighbourhood surf shops. Surf Report and Windguru work well for swell, but only locals know which spot responds best to each configuration.
