Biarritz in December is one of the Basque Coast’s best-kept secrets. The city loses 80% of its summer tourist footfall, prices drop, locals reclaim their terraces. And Basque Christmas has its own character.
The Christmas markets
Biarritz organises a Christmas market in the town centre in December. Smaller than the big Alsatian markets, it’s also more authentic: local produce, Basque craftspeople, chocolate from Bayonne producers. Les Halles in Biarritz is also a destination for Christmas shopping — ham, cheeses, Basque Country wines.
Off-season addresses
Restaurants are less crowded, reservations easier. It’s the best time to frequent the establishments that deserve discovering without summer pressure. El Callejon offers a selection of Rioja wines and pintxos by the fire.
The weather in December
10-14°C, frequent but mild rain. Bring a waterproof and warm layers. December Atlantic storms can be spectacular from the clifftop viewpoints.
