Some cities are for sunshine. Bayonne is a city for rain. The arcaded main streets, the museums, the vaulted taverns, the chocolate houses — everything is designed for Atlantic weather.
The old town
Bayonne’s town centre arcades are built for walking in the rain. The Grande Rue and rue Port-Neuf have covered walkways along their entire length. You can spend hours moving from shop to chocolate house without getting wet.
The Basque Museum
Bayonne’s Musée Basque is one of the finest in the Basque Country. Collections of art, ethnography and history. Closed Tuesdays. Entry: €6.50, free on the first Sunday of the month.
Bayonne chocolate
Bayonne has a chocolate-making tradition dating back to the 17th century. The chocolate houses on rue du Port-Neuf (Daranatz, Cazenave, Puyodebat) have been making their own chocolate for decades. A cup of hot chocolate at Cazenave on a rainy day is one of the unmissable taste experiences of the Basque Coast.
