The Rocher de la Vierge at sunset: the Biarritz locals’ ritual

25 March 2026 icibiarritz 1 min de lecture

The Rocher de la Vierge is a rock jutting into the ocean, connected to the shore by a metal footbridge. On top, a statue of the Virgin Mary. An iconic Biarritz view.

The sunset ritual

Every evening, between 1.5 hours before and 30 minutes after sunset, Biarritz locals head to the Rocher de la Vierge. Families with children, surfers still in their wetsuits, elderly couples. It’s not a tourist attraction — it’s a piece of local life.

Why this spot

The position of the Rocher, jutting into the ocean with 270° of view, makes it Biarritz’s finest natural viewpoint. When there are clouds on the horizon, the sunset can be spectacular.

How to get there

From central Biarritz, 10 minutes on foot following the cliff edge. Free access, open until nightfall. Watch out at high tide — the footbridge can be splashed by waves.
