Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is the gateway to the Camino de Santiago on the French side. Every year, thousands of pilgrims set off from here towards Spain. But the town is also, quite apart from the Camino, one of the most beautiful villages in the Basque interior.
The walled old town
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port’s old town is an exceptionally well-preserved medieval ensemble. The main street (rue de la Citadelle) is lined with 16th and 17th-century Basque houses with reddish stone facades. The citadel that crowns the ensemble can be visited.
The Camino atmosphere
What makes Saint-Jean unique is its blend of local Basque life and Camino energy. Pilgrims with their walking poles and backpacks mix with locals in the town centre bars. It’s a town that lives with the passing of time, not just for tourists.
Getting there from Biarritz
55 km via the D918, 1 hour by car. Also accessible by train from Bayonne (Bayonne-Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port line, 1h30). Half-day or full-day visit recommended.
