It’s just past 7 p.m., the sun dipping over Avenue Cino Del Duca. Inside the Jaï-Alaï, light falls on the great white wall, the cancha stretches almost fifty metres, and the stands fill up. Then comes the first exchange: a sharp, almost violent crack, the ball streaks off and all but vanishes from sight. Welcome to the Gant d’Or, one of the finest spectacles of a Biarritz summer — and one of the best-kept.

The fastest ball game in the world

Cesta punta is the queen of Basque pelota disciplines. Its secret: the chistera, that long curved wicker scoop strapped to the forearm, which extends the arm and hurls the ball at dizzying speeds. Around 200 km/h on average, with peaks well beyond. Two teams face off on the cancha, the Jaï-Alaï court, where the ball rebounds off the wall before being caught at full stride. Power, precision, composure: the pelotaris are true athletes, and the show is as much ballet as duel.

The Gant d’Or, an institution

In Biarritz, the Gant d’Or is no ordinary tournament: it is the summit of the summer cesta punta calendar, drawing the world’s best players for decades. Staged at the Jaï-Alaï by the Biarritz Athletic Club, the competition is now part of a circuit that has brought together, since 2021, the three great venues of the South-West: the Gant d’Or in Biarritz, the Internationaux in Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the Cesta Pau Cup. Crowning, from one fronton to the next, the world elite of the discipline.

Five Masters, all summer

The 2026 edition runs from 8 July to 26 August and is built around five sequences — the Masters — each with its semi-finals and final. In turn come Master 1 (SIS Sécurité), Master 2 (Crédit Mutuel), Master 3 (Lauak Sport), Master 4 (Brasserie du Pays Basque) and the Slam Bien Ici, whose final on 26 August closes the season in style. Handy to know: matches take place on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

Going, like a regular

Each evening opens at 7 p.m. with a curtain-raiser, before the professionals take over. The atmosphere is family-friendly, halfway between an arena and a village fête: locals come as neighbours and replay the rallies on the way out.
